Creating Image Text in Photoshop

As you surf the web you have probably seen words that are made from photos. This looks complicated, but it is much simpler than you think and can be accomplished in a few short steps in Photoshop, this tutorial will teach you how.

First, you will want to open the image that you are going to use for inside your text. Once you have your photo ready, you will want to select the Text tool and type in your text over the photo. Choose a font that has thick lettering so that you can see your image well. Arial Black is a good font to use.

After you have typed your text, you will want to stretch it so that you can make it larger and so that it will clearly show your photo. You can do this by simply dragging the edges with the mouse. You can keep it in proportion if you wish; feel free to get creative here. Press Enter to accept the resizing of your freely transformed text.

Now you have nice big text that is covering your photo. This means that we need swap the two and put the photo in the text. To do this we are going to have to change the background layer, because Photoshop will not allow you to move your background layer above other layers. The easiest way to do this is to hold down Alt and double-click on the name “Background.” Photoshop will convert the layer to a regular layer and name it Layer 0.
After you have done this, you can click on the new layer and move it above your text layer by dragging it. What you want to do now is to use the text as a mask. You will do this by creating a clipping mask. To do this, hold down Alt and move your mouse between the two layers. The mouse cursor will turn into the Clipping Mask icon and when you click, you will create the clipping mask. The photo layer will then be indented into you the text. Your photo will now be inside of your text. Because the layer is still text, you can edit it and change it to any word that you want. The new text will also be on a transparent layer. This allows you to place it over another image without having a white outline and background around it.

If you would like you can now add more effects to your text such as a drop shadow, outer glow, bevel and emboss or whatever style you wish to add.
